Bio Steve "Hurricane" Shirk Steve plays bass for Kenefick. He was born in Houston, TX and has lived in this area all his life. He is a 5th Generation Texan on his Mother's side. Steve started out playing bass in the Wharton High School Stage Band when he was 16. He also played in the Wharton County Jr. College Stage Band for 2 years which is where he learned to play a lot of Jazz music. He got together with the guitar player and drummer and formed a band called Water Planet Band in which they recruited Mike Blakely, who went on to be a Western Novelist and Cowboy Songwriter. In 1978 he joined Dulwich Foxx which played in Southeast Texas area. After leaving Dulwich Foxx in 1984, he joined up with the drummer he played with in High School, Don Loocke, along with some other friends who were needing another bass player for their band, Caney Creek Outlaws. In 1994 Steve also joined The Southernaires, a gospel quartet in which his dad, Bill Shirk, sings baritone. They've put out one album, "Songs We'll Sing In Glory," in 2000 and are planning to put out 2 more albums in the next year. In 2000 he also joined the third and fourth bands that he now plays in. The third band, Loky, is a folk rock band that plays in the Houston area. It was also a chance for him to play with long time friend and co-writer Jimmy Mac, who plays guitar in Loky. In August of 2000 while playing in Loky, David Fahl asked him if he was interested in playing in another band. He told him he might be interest and showed up for a practice. When he walked in the room, Quintin Watts was on the drums and the first thing he told him was "I just had my first drum lesson today." Needless to say he didn't think the band was going much of anywhere. Nether the less, he though he would try it for a while. He even tried to quit the next month, but Marty said they couldn't find a bass player anywhere near as good as he was. In Oct. he practiced with Keith Quinones and enjoyed playing with a real drummer so much he stayed with the band. Kenefick, which is the fourth band, has made strong steady progress ever since. Steve is single and lives in Sugar Land, TX and has his own company, Shy Foxx Productions |
